![]() Fellow traveler,
Accommodations vary depending on the destination. In East Africa and the South American Amazon we usually stay in rustic lodges or in some cases where there are no lodges we use tents; in the Galapagos Islands we live aboard a small but luxurious boat. If you're joining me in the Ecuadorian rainforest of the upper Amazon basin, you'll stay in thatched lodges unobtrusively tucked into the jungle greenery. This is definitely a primitive experience! I have tried a number of different boats in the Galapagos, everything from small converted fishing boats to giant cruse ships. By far the finest experience has been aboard one of the numerous 15-30 passenger boats – all with air conditioning, toilet facilities in each cabin, fine dining and a friendly bar. It's ideal for the Galapagos - large enough to provide all the amenities but small enough you won't wait your turn going ashore, you'll have plenty of time to view wildlife, snorkel or swim, or just lie on deck relaxing. Unlike the larger cruise ships, there is less chance you'll have to listen to whiners and complainers who have little appreciation for the significance of these enchanted islands. As tour leader, I'll make sure we receive the service we deserve and I'm happy to share information about wildlife. I will try not to regiment your vacation. If you're tired and want to sit out a hike or a swim by all means do it. Conversely, when I announce our schedule for a particular activity I won't hold up the entire group if you're not there on time. Group travel isn't for everyone and if you're the type of person who wants to go it alone, it probably isn't for you. The advantages of group travel are numerous. For those willing to be flexible and tolerant of others my trips will prove to be an experience of a lifetime. Our next trip is a Luxury African Safari leaving December, 2008. For a detailed description of our trips check out the Galapagos Island Excursion, Ecuadorian Rainforest Expedition, and Luxury African Safari itineraries.
