Trip Itinerary

Day 1  - Depart Newark late afternoon.

Day 2  - Arrive Amsterdam early morning for a couple hour layover and then on to Tanzania. Arrive at Kilimanjaro in the evening and transfer to Arusha (30 minutes) for dinner. Overnight at Ngurdoto Mountain Lodge. This is a small intimate lodge, with private bungalows and view of Mount Kilimanjaro. It is a wonderful welcome to Tanzania.

Day 3  - Morning is free to relax or walk in the area. Lunch at the lodge and afternoon game drive in Arusha National Park. This is a small but interestingly diverse park with mountain habitat, finger lakes and woodlands. This is the only place you will see black and white colobus monkeys. Overnight at Ngurdoto Mountain Lodge.

Day 4  - After breakfast, we leave Ngurdoto Mountain Lodge and drive to Tarangire, Tanzania’s 4th largest national park and considered its most scenic with huge baobab trees and acacia-dotted hills. The park is famous for its resident elephants, large prides of lions, leopards, giraffe and incredible diversity of birds. During this time of the year, the grass is usually still high, but wildlife can still be spotted. Accommodations in this small permanent tented camp, allowing for a night drive this evening. Overnight at Kikoti Tented Lodge.

Day 5  - Game drives in Tarangire. Because Kikoti is located on the perimeter of the national park, you have the option of a game walk this afternoon. One evening at Kikoti you will enjoy a night drive and the other evening will be a dinner under the stars with traditional Maasai dancing. Overnight at Kikoti Tented Lodge.

Day 6  - After breakfast, we leave Kikoti Tented Lodge and drive to Lake Manyara. We may have time to visit a Maasai village, hike, swim in the pool or bicycle. Overnight at E Unuto Lodge.

Day 7 - We leave E Unuto and continue to the Serengeti, stopping along the way to visit Oldupai Gorge, the site of Louis and Mary Leakey’s famous archeological discoveries. Drive to the Serengeti, arriving in time for a short afternoon game drive. Overnight at Mbalageti Serengeti Tented Chalet.

Day 8  - Game drive in the Serengeti. This is a wonderful time of the year to visit the Serengeti with the huge wildebeest and zebra herds located centrally during this season. January-March usually is witness to the wildebeest calving season, which stimulates increased predator-prey activity. You will explore vast areas of the park on the next few days, choosing either full days with box lunches or the ability to return to the camp for a hot lunch and siesta before venturing out again in the late afternoon. Overnight at Mbalageti Serengeti Tented Chalet.

Day 9  - Game Drives. Overnight at Mbalageti Serengeti Tented Chalet.

Day 10  - After breakfast, continue to the Crater Highlands, passing some of the most fertile growing areas in Tanzania. The rich volcanic soil produces the majority of Tanzania’s wheat. Arrive at the Crater in time for lunch and then descend into the Crater for a game drive. Overnight at Ngorongoro Farm House.

Day 11  - Full day in the Crater with a special bush lunch. Overnight at Ngorongoro Farm House.

Day 12  - We leave Ngorongoro Farm House and return to Arusha stopping for lunch at Bouganvillia Lodge along the way. Dayroom at Arumeru River Lodge.  The rest of the afternoon is free to relax at the pool or shop in Arusha, shower and pack. Farewell dinner and early evening transfer to Kilimanjaro for departure for return flight to the US.
